Levees and Ridges

Natural levees are embankments all along the river channel that act as partial barriers between the river and the backswamp. Their cover of trees and vegetation help hold them in place. You'll find sycamore, green ash, cottonwood and sugarberry plentiful in natural levees.
Low and high ridges are former natural levees that have been left behind as the river migrated and are now located on the outer portions of the floodplain, behind recent levees and backswamps.

Low ridges are lower in elevation and are flooded more often than high ridges and therefore, different vegetation is attracted to the ridges depending on their frequency of flooding. Trees prevalent on low ridges are willow oak, red maple, sweetgum and laurel. High ridges often have cherrybark oak, swamp chestnut and American beech.
