| Forested peatlands are very
distinct forests located in organic (peat rich) soils of the lowest parts of
the Roanoke and Cashie Rivers and their connecting tributaries. Swamp/Pocosin
forests occurs in low flat areas of the lower Roanoke River floodplain, with
no topographic diversity, underlain by moderate to deep deposits of peat.
These areas are at sea level and do not
receive any sediment from the river channel. They are ancient, drowned
rivers filled in with peat sediment. Over the last two centuries, many of
these wetlands have been ditched and drained for farming and tree
plantations. You'll find bald cypress, pond cypress, and Atlantic white
cedar in these habitats. |
