Galie's latest book inspires a new look at nature's gifts...just outside your door
175 Paces explores the world of nature... right under our noses

Visual artist Carl Galie is well aware of the distances some photographers are willing to travel to capture images from exotic lands.  He chose to do the exact opposite, and the result is a lovely and moving pictorial entitled 175 Paces.

Inspired by the writings of Thoreau and Emerson—and the simplistic beauty they experienced at Walden Pond in the mid-19th Century—Galie set out two years ago to create an entire photographic book filled with images captured within 175 Paces from his friends’ cabin home.

“In my travels over the past 17 years as a photographer and teacher,” Galie says, “the most common statement I’ve heard aspiring photographers make is ‘there is nothing here to photograph.’ I hope to be able to dispel that myth with this project.”

Created over a two-year period, the book’s photographs include a dazzling array of subjects – from panoramic scenes of fall foliage reflected in a pond’s morning haze to the winged flurry of a lone dragonfly perched on a singular offshoot of a wildflower.  The project’s 24-month timeframe allowed Galie to document the four seasons – and the wildlife and landscape unique to the changing time of year.  The pictures have a spiritual quality to them, inspiring the reader with a tangible sense of peace and tranquility.

Intertwining quotes from Thoreau and Emerson with stunning photographs of geese skimming to a stop on the early morning pond, Galie indeed proves that the poetic quality of nature is all around us.  His message of simplicity in the midst of today’s fast-paced world is a welcome reminder that there is much to be seen and appreciated within our own 175-pace slice of Earth.

“His exquisite photographs … take the breath away. Carl’s photography opens eyes and minds wide to the realization that we should all work a bit harder to save the wonders of the earth that his cameras so easily capture.”
